Diabetes Patient to Speak about taking Control of the Disease At Columbus Regional Healthcare System
October 7, 2011
South Carolina native Drew Rainwater has a strong history of diabetes on both sides of his family tree. But that did not make it any easier for him when he learned in early 2003 that he, too, had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

With the help of family members and guidance and support from his doctors, Drew kept a positive attitude and learned what he needed to do to take control his disease. He has been successful and is now sharing his story and his lifestyle strategies with others.

Drew became an A1C Champion® in August 2007 and has traveled the US helping others take control of their diabetes.   “To see the light bulb come on in someone’s eyes is very gratifying,” he says. “I want people to know that they should never give up and never give in.”

Drew will be speaking at Columbus Regional Healthcare System on Thursday October 13 at 6pm.

If you or someone you know is struggling with diabetes or has as A1C that is 7% or above, the A1C Champions® can provide motivation to take those first steps to a healthier life. Diabetes patients need to know they are not alone and there are people like Drew who can help them along the way.

CRHS Auxiliary Donates TVs to Hospital
October 7, 2011
Patients and visitors at CRHS may notice upgrades to the televisions in the patient rooms thanks to The Auxiliary at Columbus Regional Healthcare System. The group that operates the hospital gift shop recently purchased 10 flat-screen televisions for use in patient rooms.

“Some of the televisions were older, larger units and in need of replacing,” commented Dawn Jenkins, Volunteer Coordinator. “The Volunteers were happy to assist with the project that provided the flat screen TV’s for the hospital and for our patients.”

The CRHS Auxiliary raises money through various fundraisers and through sales in the hospital’s gift shop, The Sunshine Shop. In the past years, over $95,000 has been given back to the hospital and community in the form of equipment for various departments, sponsorship of the HOSA scholarship, supporting community events, comfort care bags for patients at Donayre Cancer Care Center, and baby caps for the Family Birthing Center, just to name a few.

Columbus Regional Healthcare System Receives Top Performer Quality Recognition
September 14, 2011
Columbus Regional Healthcare System today was named one of the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. Columbus Regional was recognized by The Joint Commission based on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma.

Columbus Regional is one of only 405 U.S. hospitals and critical access hospitals and one of only 14 hospitals in North Carolina, earning the distinction of top performer on key quality measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. Inclusion on the list is based on an aggregation of accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the previous calendar year. For example, this first recognition program is based on data that were reported for 2010.

To be recognized as a top performer on key quality measures an organization must meet two 95 percent performance thresholds. First they must achieve a composite performance of 95 percent or above after the results of all the accountability measures for which they report data to The Joint Commission were factored into a single score, including measures that had less than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, they must meet or exceed a 95 percent performance target for every single accountability measure for which they report data, excluding any measures with less than 30 eligible cases or patients.

Columbus Regional was recognized for achieving these thresholds for pneumonia and surgical care.

“Today, the public expects transparency in the reporting of performance at the hospitals where they receive care, and The Joint Commission is shining a light on the top performing hospitals such as Columbus Regional Healthcare System that have achieved excellence on a number of vital measures of quality of care,” says Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president, The Joint Commission.

“We understand that what matters most to patients is safe, effective care. That’s why Columbus Regional has made a commitment to accreditation and to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. Columbus Regional is proud to be named to the list of The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures,” says Henry Hawthorne, CEO, CRHS.
In addition to being included in today’s release of The Joint Commission’s “Improving Americas Hospitals” annual report, Columbus Regional will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website (www.qualitycheck.org).

Singletary Family Sponsors Memorial Award at CRHS
June 15, 2011
The John B. Singletary family recently established an employee award at Columbus Regional Healthcare System in the memory of their wife and mother, Bettie Singletary. To be presented annually, The Bettie Ann Lamb Singletary Memorial Award was established to recognize an employee for going “above and beyond” the routine to improve patient safety.

At the 2011 hospital employee service awards banquet, held in May, the memorial award was presented to Christopher Harris of the Imaging Department. Ann Singletary Richards, daughter of Bettie Singletary, was on hand to accept the perpetual plaque that will hang in the lobby of the hospital. At an earlier ceremony, Mrs. Richards and her father presented the award to Harris.

The generosity of the Singletary family will allow the hospital to recognize and reward the annual winner of the “Good Catch Award” program. Established last summer, the employee recognition program is designed to encourage hospital staff to report unplanned events that did not result in injury, illness or damage, but may have had the potential to do so. Quality and safety experts believe that examining these close calls provides hospitals with a critical opportunity to identify and implement potentially lifesaving risk-reduction strategies.

The memorial award was established by Mrs. Singletary’s husband, John B. Singletary and children, Ann Singletary Richards, Bob Singletary and Dan Singletary.

Bettie Singletary, who died last December, had many connections with CRHS including the fact that she was born in the Maultsby house, the first site of the hospital in Columbus County and she also helped organize the candy stripers program many years ago. Mrs. Singletary served in the Red Cross during WWII and volunteered with the local Red Cross Chapter over the years in Whiteville.

CRHS Auxilliary Donates over $25,000 in Equipment
August 21, 2008
The Auxiliary of Columbus Regional Healthcare System made several donations in 2008 to the hospital that helped improve efficiencies, enhance patient care and assisted students in obtaining a college degree. A 2008 Ford Van, valued at over $22,000, equipment for the laboratory, valued at over $2400, along with a $1000 donation to the HOSA Scholarship Fund were the 2008 gifts to CRHS.

The van, purchased locally, will be used to transport food/supplies to offsite locations, including meal and laundry service to the recently completed, Hospice Life Care Center. The Department of Laboratory Services received a STATspin Express 4 centrifuge, which will spin blood needed for chemistry tests in 3 minutes, as opposed to 10 minute equipment. “This new equipment will be so beneficial in providing a more rapid turn-around time, which will improve the patients’ experience” says Janet Royal, Director of Laboratory Services. “We were so honored that the Auxiliary chose to purchase this centrifuge for our department.”

Members of the Auxiliary provide many services to the hospital and the community, assisting in registration, greeting visitors at the information desk in the main lobby, providing communication with visitors/families in the surgical waiting room, helping out in various departments throughout the hospital, as well as staffing the appropriately named hospital gift shop, “The Sunshine Shop”, for visitors/employees. “Our volunteers provide a wonderful service to our hospital” states Terrie Priest, Vice President of Business Development and Community Relations, “It is always a comfort to see those pink (or blue jackets), those smiling faces and those warm expressions of assistance in all that they do.”

The money collected from fundraising events and sales in the gift shop go to support CRHS and the community. These recent donations to the hospital are just a few of the many monetary contributions the Auxiliary has made to CRHS over the past years. The Auxiliary has purchased equipment for the Physical Therapy Department; equipment for the Department of Laboratory Services; provided support to the Donayre Cancer Care Center with the purchase of goodie bags for cancer patients, DVD players for the Center and monetary support; and supported the Adopt-A-Child program sponsored by the Pastoral Care Department at Christmas as well as the hospital sponsored HOSA Scholarships.
