The Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Columbus Regional Healthcare System is committed to improving quality of life through excellence in the evaluation, treatment and management of patients with disorders of speech, voice, language, cognition, memory and swallowing. The Speech-Language Pathology staff interfaces with all disciplines, including: general medicine, otolaryngology, radiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy and nursing.

Speech-Language Pathology services are provided to outpatients and inpatients. Our clinical expertise and core values of compassion and respect demonstrate our firm commitment to providing the highest quality of care for our patients.

Disorders treated include:

  • Dysphagia (swallowing disorder) or Feeding Difficulties
  • Fluency (stuttering) Disorders
  • Voice Disorders
  • Articulation Disorders
  • Oral-Motor Deficits
  • Cognitive-Linguistic
  • Childhood Apraxia of Speech
  • Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD) (Fast ForWord certification)
  • Aphasia
  • Apraxia
  • Autism, PDD
  • Cochlear Implant
  • Developmental Speech-Language Delay  
  • Dysarthria (slurred speech)

  • Speech and language skills
  • Listening and understanding
  • Augmentative and alternative communication, such as sign language or using a communication device
  • Swallowing and feeding disorders (DPNS and NMES certifications)
  • Cognitive skills including organization, memory and word retrieval
  • Artificial Larynx Device/Electrolarynx (following a laryngectomy)

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology provides a full range of services to individuals from infancy through geriatrics. A doctor's order is required prior to the initial evaluation.

Following the evaluation, an individualized treatment plan focusing on establishing functional and reliable communication is implemented. Patients with dysphagia (swallowing disorder) are seen for a comprehensive evaluation, which may include a Modified Barium Swallow Study. This study is followed by swallowing treatment and diet modification as needed.
